6. Select one survivor’s story. Summarize the story of the Holocaust survivor and paste a picture here. I picked Leo Heiman. When WW2 begun, Leo’s father thought that something very bad was in store for them, so the family rushed to the Russian border. They payed a farmer to take them, by wagon, to Leo’s grandmother’s pitch factory in Baranowicze. The whole family gathered and they hoped that the Germans would not hurt them because they would need the factory run by the family. One day, the children were playing in the forest adjacent to the factory, when the Germans came. (Somebody had been aware that the family was there, and informed the Germans.) They escaped and ran away deep into the forest. They joined a Partisans’ group and the Partisans had a rule: people can only join if they steal food from farmers and steal weapons. Leo’s father found many other Jews and had them join. They ambushed at night and killed many Germans. Leo’s father heard shots and came up, from his hiding spot, and was shot by a soldier. Leo’s mother found his body and 15-year-old Leo couldn’t stop crying. He buried Leo’s father’s body in the deep snow. When the war ended, Leo and his mother went to Israel and Leo became an Israeli soldier. After that he became a reporter and a writer. Leo wrote books, one was called “I am a Soviet guerilla.” Another important event was when he witnessed the execution of Eichmann as a reporter. His life was hard and he was brave and I enjoyed learning about him.
7. What is Safe Haven: The Warsaw Zoo? How was Marsha involved? Safe Haven: The Warsaw Zoo is a movie that is based on a true story. When people start capturing Jews, a couple use an empty zoo to hide 300 Jews. The 300 survived. Marsha is involved because she was the Education Coordinator.

I learned what people experienced during the Holocaust, I know what people that were captured by the Germans were either killed or ( like Marsha’s mother) if they could sew they would stay and sew uniforms for the German soldier’s. People that were caught by the Germans that would not be any use to them were killed or hanged. During the Holocaust places were bombed as the German’s entered Poland. The Germans created the Ghettos to keep the Jews away from everyone else. Jews were forced to wear an armband with the Star of David on it.
